Whether you're in the middle of a hot summer and in desperate need of air conditioning repair or bracing for a cold winter and need to ensure your heating system is performing properly, cabin comfort is one of the most important aspects for a driver.
In Canada, we live in a country of weather extremes. Here in Edmonton, it can get sweltering in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. Sure, warm weather is great if you're by the beach relaxing, but it's not so much fun when you're stuck in traffic in the city or staring down hundreds of miles of highway. Additionally, overheating in a truck can be the cause of drowsiness and dehydration for long-haul truckers. In worst case scenario, exhaust can't even leak into the cabin if your HVAC system is not set up properly.
HEAVY TRUCK AIR CONDITIONING UNITS
If you've been around for a while, you'll remember a time when air conditioning in vehicles was a luxury. Today, to put it as a necessity would be an understatement. Modern air conditioning units in trucks use a relatively small amount of power from your engine to cool off and re-circulate the air inside your cab. Unfortunately, the process is not infinite and over time the system can be drained, need refilling, or encounter issues that require further diagnostics and repair.
The air conditioning unit in your truck works almost the same as the one in your home. Chemical refrigerant (most vehicles use Freon) uses condensation and evaporation to heat and cool different parts of the air conditioning system. Essentially, this process absorbs hot air from inside the vehicle, passes it through a cold chamber, and blows it back out into the cabin to give you a cool breeze.
If it seems like your air conditioning isn't running as effectively as it once was, it's possible that you have a leak in your system and warm air from outside is getting in and mixing with the cool air. Obviously, this needs repair as it's blowing a mix of cold air and warm air. Additionally, the Freon in your system might have a leak and need repair or refill.
